So people had read the book a long time ago (it was like a rite of passage coming of age in a certain time and place) and TBH remembered very little apart from the odd name (because some of Jilly’s creations were pretty darn good – says Rupert Campbell Black all of them – and somewhat enshrined in the lexicon), but almost immediately I started, if I didn’t remember the plot, getting a synaptic moment of YSL’s heady opium scent from watching The Rivals. He giggles funny how he laughs out loud and is cuddly, not snarky.

He quickly built a world – the 1980s, greedy Thatcherite old boys and yuppies, bored wives and fearsome warriors who were treated like meat no matter what they did, connivance, cigars and birdsong, the English classroom, the globalization of the United Kingdom of the World . and the socio-political commentary, even if it’s not shoved in your face, is much clearer than when reading the books.
