About to embark on a world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley begins to experience increasingly terrifying and inexplicable events. Overwhelmed by the mounting horrors and pressures of fame, Skye is forced to confront her past. The scar on Skye’s knee is shaped like a smile. In one scene, Skye places a VOSS water bottle on a stone/marble kitchen counter and a sound consistent with something plastic being put down is heard. VOSS water bottles are made of glass, something that is actually specifically highlighted in the film, and thus the audio does not match the action seen. A very disturbing depiction of the Smile phenomenon using the pop music scene and celebrity culture as a backdrop. Skye, the main character, is at the forefront of this horrifying story that showcases layers and layers of someone’s life spiraling out of control. We see most of the story from Skye’s perspective and so the film does a great job of creating empathy for the character despite all her moral failings. It also showcases deep themes about the toxic culture of pop celebrity. In the film, smiling takes on many meanings as it also reflects the pressure to show up and smile for the cameras when someone’s mental health is in shambles. Her mom, assistant, and fans all seem reasonable in the chaos but their actions seem to become instruments of torture. It’s so disturbing, personally I feel like Skye has been through too much and by the end I was just relieved the film was over. If you like body horror you’ll love this. The movie is pretty scary, but it’s more disturbing than scary.
