In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break. But as a mysterious killer stalks Hollywood starlets, a trail of blood threatens to reveal her sinister past. Theda Bara, the actress Pearl based her alligator on in Pearl (2022). The Bette Davis quote shown at the beginning of the film is distorted. It is actually “Until you’re known in my profession as a freak, you’re not a star.” Maxine Minx: Do you know what happened to the last person who tried to kill me? I broke her fucking head off. In keeping with the film’s 1980s aesthetic, a “Be kind rewind” sticker is shown after the credits, much like many video rentals. Edited from X (2022). I may have been a little too excited to see this third installment of the X-Trilogy because I left the theater feeling a little disappointed. Mia Goth rocks the role of Maxine. But the character deserved a better ending. The stakes didn’t feel high enough. I’m a Kevin Bacon fan, but his character wasn’t menacing at all. He was more comedic (in an annoying way) and was given way too much screen time. The murders were okay. The detectives were one-dimensional characters… and the ending was disappointing. I would have liked to see more of a Tarantino vibe. The best part of the movie (aside from Mia) was the use of 80’s music and nostalgia. But I can’t really attribute that to the filmmakers. It’s not a bad movie by any means. All the elements were there. But the final product wasn’t as dynamic as it could have been. Looking for something different to add to your Watchlist?
